Top Fault of 1998
The overall reliability of the Lex fleet has actually worsened since
the 1997 Reliability Survey. In 1997, on a sample size of 77,518 vehicles,
drivers experienced 15,506 mechanical faults with a Mechanical Breakdowns
Per Hundred Vehicles (MBPHV) of 20.
In the 1998 survey on a bigger sample size of 88,048 drivers experienced
21,620 mechanical faults which worked out at a Mechanical Breakdowns
Per Hundred Vehicles figure (MBPHV) of 24.5. That means that drivers
on the Lex fleet have a one-in-four chance that their car suffered
from a mechanical fault which caused the car to be repaired by the
roadside or recovered between 1 December 1996 and 30 November 1997.
The top fault continued to be with alternators which this year totalled
945 faults, 333 of which were experienced on M-registered vehicles.
However, engine faults moved from third place in 1997 to second place
this year with 657 faults. These were most prevalent on M and N-registered
vehicles. Faults on clutch assemblies totalled 564 faults, but dropped
to third place since the 1997 survey.
Despite this minor move in the placings, starter motors, cambelts
and cylinder head gaskets all retained their position at four, five
and six respectively.
